Engineering Tone for a Legend: The Eric Clapton Cornell Custom 80
During Denis Cornell’s tenure with Arbiter, he was contacted directly by Lee Dickson—Eric Clapton’s longtime guitar technician—bearing a personal letter from Clapton seeking a solution to refine the tone of his 3x10 Fender amplifiers.
Following their initial collaboration, Clapton commissioned Denis to design and hand-build a bespoke amplifier based on the classic 1957 Fender Twin circuit. Clapton’s specifications were uncompromising in their simplicity: pure, streamlined controls for Volume, Bass, and Treble, paired with the hemp-cone Tone Tubby speakers favored for his setup.
The result was the legendary Cornell Custom 80 2x12 Combo—a masterwork of high-headroom, hand-wired British craftsmanship designed specifically for one of the greatest guitarists in rock history.
